The great East-West trade route was first travelled in the 2nd century BC and an early trade in silk soon developed. The starting point was Xian(previously known as Chang-An),then the capital of China which by 742AD had the world's largest population of 2 million. The route worked it's way west through Dunhuang and then along the foothills of the Heavenly Mountains avoiding the fierce Taklamakan Desert.Following afterwards the rich cities of Turfan & Kashgar before dividing across Central Asia or south in to present day Pakistan. The way of life has changed little through the centuries and this is a dimension of China not to be seen anywhere else.
Due to the region and places visited our departures are limited.
